EU MEPs agree priorities for the EU’s first Anti-Corruption Strategy 2026–2029, calling for tougher anti-corruption measures, stronger enforcement and greater accountability
MEPs call for the EU to become a full member of GRECO, bringing EU institutions under the same anti-corruption scrutiny as national authorities. Other priorities include tighter controls on public procurement, conflicts of interest, lobbying and political funding, stronger protection for whistleblowers. They also seek closer enforcement cooperation to trace, freeze and recover criminal proceeds…
GRECO’s 4th Round Compliance Report Addendum on Hungary finds 8 of 18 anti-corruption rec. outstanding, with no progress on parliamentary integrity or judicial accountability
Despite improvements in public consultation on legislation, MPs still lack binding ethics rules, lobbying safeguards and effective conflict-of-interest oversight. GRECO also raises concerns about broad judicial and prosecutorial immunity, the Prosecutor General’s tenure and disciplinary independence, requiring Hungary to report further progress by March 2027…
GRECO’s 5th Round Compliance Report on Hungary finds 24 of 29 anti-corruption rec. unimplemented, highlighting gaps in government integrity and law enforcement accountability
The assessment identifies 24 unimplemented and five partially implemented recommendations, highlighting persistent weaknesses in conflicts of interest, political advisers’ integrity rules, police accountability and whistleblower protections. Despite limited progress on access to information, public consultation and corruption risk mapping, GRECO calls for stronger safeguards and more decisive implementation of outstanding reforms…
GRECO’s Fifth Interim Compliance Report on Denmark finds no progress on parliamentary integrity reforms for six years, with all four anti-corruption recommendations still outstanding
The report highlights the absence of a comprehensive parliamentary code of conduct, mandatory conflict-of-interest disclosures and effective oversight of MPs’ financial interests, despite repeated calls for reform. Following Denmark’s refusal to implement further measures, GRECO has terminated its compliance procedure while expressing serious dissatisfaction with the country’s continued non-compliance.
GRECO publishes follow-up reports reviewing anti-corruption progress in Denmark, Hungary, Türkiye and Ukraine, assessing integrity reforms across parliament, the judiciary, Govt & law enforcement
Denmark has fully implemented two of six recommendations, while Hungary has fully implemented ten of 18. Türkiye has seven recommendations still unimplemented for parliamentarians, judges and prosecutors, and 21 outstanding for central government and law enforcement. Ukraine has fully implemented 19 of 31 recommendations, with the remaining 12 partially implemented…
EPPO investigates suspected corruption in an EU-funded Italian infrastructure project, with public officials allegedly receiving cash and construction work in exchange for favourable treatment
EPPO carried out searches in Italy as part of an investigation into suspected corruption surrounding a €3.67 million EU-funded landfill remediation contract in Benevento. Investigators suspect that company representatives provided public officials and others involved in the project with undue benefits—including cash payments and construction work on properties linked to suspects or their relatives—in exchange for favourable treatment during management of the contract.
GRECO calls for a national anti-corruption strategy in Luxembourg and stronger controls over conflicts of interest, lobbying, procurement and whistleblower protection at municipal level
GRECO published its Sixth Evaluation Round report on Luxembourg on 22 September, focusing on corruption prevention and integrity in local government. While identifying several positive practices, including greater transparency of municipal proceedings, GRECO found significant gaps in the wider integrity framework. Its recommendations include developing a national anti-corruption strategy, strengthening rules governing conflicts of interest and lobbying, improving oversight of public procurement and secondary activities, and enhancing access to official information and whistleblower protection. Luxembourg has been asked to report on implementation by the end of 2027.
GRECO sets out priorities for the EU’s first anti-corruption strategy, drawing on findings from its monitoring of anti-corruption frameworks across Europe
GRECO President David Meyer presented the organisation’s contribution to the forthcoming strategy at the International Anti-Corruption Academy’s European conference in Rome. GRECO is advocating stronger cooperation with the EU to reinforce independent scrutiny, consistency and accountability in tackling corruption, with its recommendations informed by recurring weaknesses identified through country evaluations and compliance monitoring…
GRECO’s 4th Compliance report flags Austria’s anti-corruption measures as “globally unsatisfactory”, with only 6 of 19 rec. addressed and gaps in parliamentary integrity, lobbying and oversight
The recommendations address areas including conflicts of interest and codes of conduct for parliamentarians, transparency in the legislative process, asset and interest declarations, and safeguards around the appointment and career progression of judges and prosecutors. Austria has made further progress, but recommendations remain outstanding and GRECO has requested another update on their implementation by 30 June 2027…
EPPO investigated suspected manipulation of €7 million in EU-funded IT procurement across Romania
The European Public Prosecutor’s Office carried out 19 searches as part of an investigation into 29 EU-funded IT projects suspected of being manipulated to favour preselected suppliers of cloud infrastructure solutions. Investigators identified indications that consultancy documentation was systematically reused across projects and that suppliers may have submitted false or incomplete documents, with OLAF providing operational analysis to the investigation.
EPPO announces new arrests and a further request to lift a Polish MP’s immunity as part of an ongoing corruption investigation into EU-funded tram infrastructure projects
The European Chief Prosecutor submitted the renewed request to the Polish Sejm on 29 July following further investigative developments. The case is editorially useful because it demonstrates the practical tension between parliamentary immunity and the investigation of alleged corruption involving elected officials…
