Nicholas Monkhouse

About

Nick Monkhouse is Deputy Director, Sanctions Regimes and Litigation at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. He has worked on sanctions since 2020, completing the establishment of the UK’s autonomous sanctions framework and implementing sanctions in a variety of contexts and regimes. He led the Russia sanctions response to the invasion of Ukraine through 2022 and 2023. Prior to this he worked on EU affairs, covering UK-EU cooperation and negotiations, and was previously posted to South Africa, as head of the team covering South African domestic and economic issues at the British High Commission. He has worked for the diplomatic service for 17 years, and has also worked on Latin America, WTO and G20 negotiations, and international development. In 2020 he was awarded an OBE for services to British foreign policy and is a recent graduate of the Royal College of Defence Studies.
