Matthew Ray
About
Matt Ray is Deputy Director at the Department for Business and Trade and is joint Senior Responsible Owner for the Economic Crime & Corporate Transparency Bill and the Economic Crime (T&E) Act 2022 which preceded it. He has policy responsibility for core elements of UK company law, with a particular focus at present on measures to reform Companies House and tackle the misuse of corporate entities in economic crime. Until recently, he was also Chair of the UK Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative.
He has been in this role since 2016, having previously spent seven years as a senior advisor at HM Treasury, majoring on tax, welfare and energy policy. Prior to that he worked for the National Audit Office, reviewing the effectiveness of, and auditing the financial statements of, government agencies and programmes in the energy and defence sectors. Matt is a chartered accountant (FCA) and holds a degree from Oxford University.
