CONFERENCE VENUE

We are proud to be hosting this year's event in the magnificent Merchant Taylors' Hall, which is situated in the heart of the City, London's financial centre. Bank underground station is within a three minute walk. Liverpool Street and Fenchurch Street stations are close by - for venue map click here»

The fine Great Hall, the Cloisters, Drawing Room, King's Gallery, Courtroom, Library and garden have all been reserved to provide a unique historic setting for the conference.

The Great Hall, a grand, triple-height space, with dramatic chandeliers, is one of the largest in the City. The King's Gallery was so named after King James I used it as a private dining space in 1607. Mullioned windows overlook a secret garden in chateau-style setting, with its classic statues, scented flowers and fountain. Yet for all its grandeur and tradition, Merchant Taylors' is right up to date.

The Guild was founded before the beginning of the 14th century by an association of citizens who were Tailors and Linen Armourers. The Linen Armourers, an allied craft to the Tailors, made the padded tunics or gambesons worn under suits of armour. By virtue of various Royal Charters commencing with that of Edward III in 1327, the functions of the Guild were extended and by about the end of the 15th century it controlled the trade. However, as many of its members ceased to be craftsmen and became merchants trading with other parts of the world, the position of the Company gradually changed and by the end of the 17th century its connection with the tailoring trade had virtually ceased and it became what it is today - an association of philanthropic and social character, devoting its energies to educational and charitable activities.
